If you’re dreaming of a wedding that feels completely and beautifully you — intimate, meaningful, and free from the stress of a traditional big wedding — then let me tell you something: Georgia might just be your perfect elopement destination. And I say that with so much excitement, because I truly love photographing elopements here!

From the timeless elegance of Atlanta’s historic estates to the charming streets of Augusta, the vibrant culture of Athens, and the hidden gems of Macon, Georgia offers something truly extraordinary for every couple. Whether you’re envisioning a romantic garden ceremony dripping in Southern charm, a quiet lakeside moment just the two of you, or a stunning outdoor celebration surrounded by lush Georgia landscapes, this state has it all.

As a Georgia elopement photographer serving metro Atlanta, Henry County, Lake Oconee, and beyond, I am so thrilled to share this complete guide to the best places to elope in Georgia. Let’s dive in!

1. Atlanta, Georgia – Where Southern Elegance Meets Natural Beauty

Atlanta is one of my absolute favorite cities to photograph elopements in, and it’s easy to see why so many couples choose it for their special day. This city is full of personality, from stunning historic architecture and lush green parks to hidden urban gems and iconic skyline views. Whatever your vision, Atlanta delivers.

The Swan House at the Atlanta History Center – My Personal Favorite

If there is one elopement location in Atlanta that I will never stop raving about, it is the Swan House. And once you see it in person, you will completely understand why!

Elegance meets romance at this gorgeous 1928 mansion, which is nestled within the Atlanta History Center in the heart of Buckhead. The Swan House is a breathtaking example of Italian and English classical architecture. Think cascading fountains, manicured gardens, grand staircases, and ivy-covered walls that transport you to another world entirely. It is truly one of the most stunning venues I have ever had the privilege of photographing.

Every corner of this estate offers something beautiful to work with. The iconic swan fountain, the sweeping outdoor staircase, the lush garden pathways – the backdrop practically creates the magic for you. The light and the architecture here work together in the most beautiful way.

The Atlanta History Center offers elopement and vow renewal packages for up to twenty guests (including the couple, officiant, and photographer), with a rental period of up to four hours. I highly recommend booking well in advance, as this is one of Atlanta’s most sought-after elopement locations. Inquire directly with the Atlanta History Center to learn more about their packages and availability.

Pro Tip: Consider a weekday ceremony for more privacy and a more intimate atmosphere!

Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park is Atlanta’s most beloved green space, and for good reason. With sweeping views of the Atlanta skyline, a gorgeous lake, tree-lined paths, and open green fields bathed in beautiful light, Piedmont Park offers so much versatility for an elopement.

It’s often free or low-cost to elope here, which is a wonderful bonus, and the scenery lends itself to bright, airy, light-filled photography. If you love the blend of nature and city energy, this one is for you!

Atlanta Botanical Garden

For the plant-loving, garden-obsessed couple, the Atlanta Botanical Garden is an absolute dream. Located right next to Piedmont Park, this stunning 30+ acre garden features a diverse array of plants, sculptures, a grand staircase, and unique indoor and outdoor spaces that make for truly one-of-a-kind elopement photos. The garden offers elopement packages, so be sure to reach out to them directly to plan your day.

Arabia Mountain

If you’re looking for something a little more dramatic and unexpected close to the city, Arabia Mountain is a showstopper. This ancient granite outcrop sits about 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta and creates an almost otherworldly landscape – perfect for couples who want their elopement photos to feel truly unique.

A short hike to the summit rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and during certain seasons, rare wildflowers burst into vivid color across the stone. It is absolutely breathtaking and one of my personal favorites near Atlanta!

Sweetwater Creek State Park

Just 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta, Sweetwater Creek State Park is a peaceful, 215-acre gem that feels worlds away from the city. You can explore forested trails together, follow the winding creek, take in the historic textile mill ruins, and enjoy the beautiful lake – all in one place. It’s the perfect blend of nature, history, and Southern charm. A wonderful choice for the couple who loves the outdoors!

2. Augusta, Georgia – History, Charm, and Southern Beauty

Augusta is a city that is often overlooked as an elopement destination, and honestly? That is one of the things I love most about it. There is something so special about discovering a place that feels like a beautiful secret. Augusta is rich in Southern heritage, gorgeous natural scenery, and charming historic architecture that creates a truly romantic backdrop for an intimate ceremony.

Pendleton King Park

Pendleton King Park is honestly one of Augusta’s most gorgeous hidden gems. With multiple beautiful gardens, charming gazebos, a spring-fed wetland, and lush green spaces, this park is a dream for an intimate outdoor elopement.

It’s peaceful, accessible, and absolutely beautiful – the kind of place that feels perfectly designed for quiet moments of connection. I love the variety of backdrops this park offers, from the manicured garden spaces to the natural wetland areas.

The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area

The Augusta Canal is a National Heritage Area and one of Augusta’s most scenic destinations. With peaceful towpaths winding alongside the historic canal, lush greenery, and beautiful still waters, it offers a truly lovely setting for a relaxed, intimate ceremony.

The combination of natural beauty and historical significance makes this location feel meaningful and timeless – perfect for the couple who loves a backdrop with character and depth.

Augusta’s Historic Downtown

Augusta’s historic downtown district is filled with stunning antebellum architecture, tree-lined streets, and plenty of charming spots that make for beautiful elopement portraits. The Savannah River runs through the heart of the city, offering gorgeous waterfront scenery that is hard to beat.

Strolling through Augusta’s historic streets on your wedding day, with the warm Georgia light filtering through the oak trees, is the kind of experience that creates memories you’ll treasure forever.

3. Athens, Georgia – Vibrant, Charming, and Beautifully Scenic

Athens is a city that captures hearts quickly, and it’s no wonder why. Known for its vibrant culture, stunning natural surroundings, and the beautiful University of Georgia campus, Athens offers a wonderful mix of scenery for couples looking for something a little different. I love the energy and the beauty of this city, and there are some truly gorgeous spots to elope here!

State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Located just three miles from downtown Athens on the University of Georgia campus, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a stunning and unique elopement setting. The garden offers a variety of beautiful venues suitable for intimate ceremonies, including gorgeous outdoor spaces filled with lush plant life, winding paths, and peaceful natural scenery. If you’re a nature lover who dreams of a lush, green garden elopement, this one is absolutely worth exploring.

The Georgia Museum of Art

For the art-loving couple, the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens offers a sophisticated and unique setting for an intimate ceremony. Its elegant architecture and refined atmosphere make it a wonderful choice for couples who want something a little unexpected and culturally rich for their elopement.

The Countryside Around Athens

One of the things I love most about the Athens area is the stunning countryside that surrounds the city. Just outside of town, you’ll find rolling Georgia farmland, scenic ponds, towering trees, and beautiful pastoral landscapes that are simply made for elopement photography.

There are several charming farm venues and private estates in the Athens area that offer intimate elopement settings. This is perfect for couples who love the idea of a quiet, tucked-away ceremony surrounded by the beauty of the Georgia countryside.

Toccoa Falls (Just Over an Hour from Athens!)

If you’re open to a short scenic drive from Athens, Toccoa Falls is an absolute must-see. At 186 feet, it’s one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi River, and the lush surrounding forest and misty atmosphere create such a romantic and serene setting. I’d recommend planning your ceremony earlier in the day, as the light fades quickly beneath the falls closer to evening. This location does require a permit and a small fee, but I promise you, it is absolutely worth it!

4. Macon, Georgia – A Hidden Gem in the Heart of the State

If you ask me, Macon is one of Georgia’s most underrated cities, and I think it deserves so much more attention as an elopement destination! Macon is a city full of history, soul, and natural beauty, and it has some truly wonderful spots to say ‘I do.’

Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

This is one of the most unique and meaningful elopement locations in all of Georgia, and, honestly, one that I find deeply moving. The Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is home to ancient earthwork mounds with over 17,000 years of history – one of the nation’s best-kept secrets, and soon to be designated as Georgia’s first National Park!

The sweeping open fields, peaceful forested areas, and remarkable earthwork mounds create a backdrop that is unlike anything else in the state. There is a quiet reverence here that translates so beautifully into photographs, and I love everything about this location. It’s a wonderful choice for the couple who wants their ceremony to feel meaningful, grounded, and truly one-of-a-kind.

Lake Tobesofkee

Just outside Macon’s city limits, Lake Tobesofkee is a gorgeous year-round recreation area covering nearly 1,800 acres with 35 miles of beautiful shoreline. With public beaches, shaded pavilions, tranquil waters, and a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere, it’s a wonderful setting for a laid-back, intimate lakeside elopement.

If you’re dreaming of a quiet ceremony by the water followed by a romantic afternoon kayaking or picnicking on the shore, Lake Tobesofkee is your spot!

Macon’s Historic Downtown & Cherry Blossom Season

Macon’s historic downtown district is beautiful any time of year, but if you can time your elopement for late winter or early spring – do it! Macon is known as the ‘Cherry Blossom Capital of the World,’ and when those blooms arrive, the entire city transforms into a breathtaking pink wonderland.

Elegant antebellum homes, tree-lined streets, and sweeping cherry blossom canopies make for elopement portraits that are nothing short of magical. It’s truly a sight to behold!

Amerson River Park & The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail

For the active, outdoorsy couple, Amerson River Park and the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail offer beautiful scenic spots along the banks of the Ocmulgee River right in the heart of Macon. With lush green spaces, peaceful river views, and miles of beautiful trail to explore, this area is perfect for the couple who wants their elopement day to include a little adventure and time spent in nature.

Tips for Planning Your Perfect Georgia Elopement

Now that you’re inspired by some of Georgia’s most beautiful locations, here are a few tips to help you plan your perfect day!

Consider the Season

The best time to elope in Georgia is spring (March through May) and fall (October and November). The temperatures are mild, the scenery is gorgeous, and the light is absolutely dreamy for photography. Georgia summers can be very hot and humid, so if your heart is set on a summer elopement, I’d recommend planning your ceremony for early morning or golden hour in the evening.

Check Permits and Requirements in Advance

Some Georgia state parks, national historic sites, and private venues require permits or reservation fees for elopements and wedding ceremonies. I always recommend reaching out to your chosen location well in advance to confirm their specific requirements, availability, and any rules about what you can bring (flowers, arbors, guests, etc.).

Book Your Georgia Elopement Photographer Early

Your photographer will be one of the most important decisions you make for your elopement! As your Georgia elopement photographer, I love helping my couples scout the perfect spot and plan a timeline that makes the most of the light and the location.

Light is everything in photography, and it’s one of my top priorities when planning a session with my couples. I recommend reaching out early, as my calendar fills up quickly, especially during peak spring and fall seasons.

Get Your Marriage License in Advance

Don’t forget the paperwork! In Georgia, you’ll need a valid ID and a small fee to obtain your marriage license from the Probate Court. If at least one of you is a Georgia resident, you can apply in any county.

If neither of you is a resident, you’ll need to apply in the county where your ceremony will take place. Since Georgia marriage licenses have no expiration date, I recommend getting yours as early as possible so you have one less thing to think about on your wedding day!

Think About What Comes After

Georgia has SO much to offer beyond the ceremony itself. Think about building in some time to enjoy your destination! Whether it’s a gorgeous dinner in downtown Atlanta or Augusta, exploring Macon’s vibrant arts scene, kayaking on the Ocmulgee River, or simply taking a peaceful sunset walk together, make the most of being in such a beautiful state on such a special day.

Let’s Plan Your Georgia Elopement Together!

I hope this guide has sparked some excitement and given you a wonderful starting point for planning your Georgia elopement. Whether you’re envisioning the timeless elegance of the Swan House in Atlanta, a peaceful lakeside ceremony at Lake Tobesofkee near Macon, the charm of Augusta’s historic streets, or the stunning natural beauty surrounding Athens, I would be absolutely honored to be your photographer and help you create something truly beautiful and meaningful.

I truly believe that your wedding day should feel like YOU. That’s what eloping is all about – celebrating your love, your way, in a place that speaks to your heart. And Georgia? Georgia has so many perfect places just waiting for your story.
