If you’ve started searching for family photography in Athens, GA, you’ve probably noticed there’s no shortage of beautiful options and also no shortage of decisions to make. When should you book? Where do you go? What on earth does everyone wear? It’s a lot to think through for a single afternoon, but that afternoon becomes the artwork on your walls for years to come, so it’s worth doing thoughtfully.

With over 20 years spent photographing families across Georgia, this is the guide I wish every client had in hand before their first session. Consider it everything you need to plan a family photography session in Athens that feels relaxed, looks timeless, and gives you images you’ll be proud to pass down.
Athens is a town that wears its seasons well, and timing your session around them makes a real difference in your final gallery.
Spring (March–May): Azaleas and dogwoods bloom across the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and the historic neighborhoods near downtown, giving you soft color without much effort. Spring books quickly, so this is the season to reach out early.
Fall (October–November): Golden light, cooler temperatures, and color in the trees make fall the most requested season for family portraits in Athens, and for good reason. Just know that fall weekends fill up fast, especially with UGA home football games shaping local traffic and lodging.
Summer: Summer is great for families with kids who can’t miss school. June and early July are really popular months for summer portraits. If you (or any family members) tend to sweat easily, I’d recommend skipping late July and August. If you want the summer look without the heat, then September is an excellent choice. It’s one of the busiest months of the year, so book be sure to book early.
Winter: Winter is a beautiful, calm season. It’s the least busy season, but some of my favorite portraits have been taken on calm, beautiful winter days. Whatever season you choose, the golden hour never disappoints. It’s the hour or so before sunset, when the light turns soft and warm, and everyone looks like their best.

The right location should feel like your family. While location choice is significant in achieving the desired look, the focus should always be on family and connection. Our private, historic Early Hill location at Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga is wonderful for families. There are no crowds to dodge, and the location has plenty of space for kids to run, play, and explore while being photographed (more on our charming Early Hill historic location below). In the meantime, here are a few other spots to consider.
This 313-acre garden off South Milledge Avenue offers an incredible range in a single visit: manicured flower beds, shaded woodland trails, a creek, and the quiet, gated charm of the Founder’s Garden tucked into the heart of UGA’s campus. It’s free to enter and genuinely has a setting for every style, from polished and formal to wild and barefoot.
If your family loves a little history with their portraits, North Campus delivers mature trees, Greek Revival architecture, and the iconic Arch. It photographs beautifully any time of year, though early morning is your best bet for soft light and fewer students wandering through your frame.
With more than 16 miles of trails through woods, open meadows, and water, Sandy Creek is ideal for families who want room to roam and a more relaxed, candid feel. It’s a particularly good choice if your kids do best with space to move rather than a single posed spot.
Tucked along the Oconee River, this is one of Athens’ quieter gems: open fields, river views, and a calm, unhurried feel that suits cozy, connected family images.
For families who want texture, brick, and a little bit of city charm, the murals and architecture downtown and the tree-lined streets of Five Points offer a different kind of timeless.
If you’d rather skip the public-park experience altogether, we also offer access to our own scenic locations, including the historic Early Hill property in Greensboro, just about 30 minutes from Athens in Greensboro, Ga (the Lake Oconee area).. It’s quiet, private, and entirely ours for your session: no other families, no other photographers, just you. This allows for true, undistracted connection and time with your family, allowing everyone to feel at ease and enjoy the moment.
Some families even choose to have their memories documented at their own home depending on the look, style, and lighting at their location. We’ll always help you choose the right setting once we know your family’s personality and what you’re hoping to feel when you look at these images years from now.

Outfits matter more than people expect, mostly because they’re the thing you’ll look at every single day on your wall. A few guidelines that hold up no matter the season or location:
Every EHF Photography session includes wardrobe guidance, so you’re never left guessing, but these basics will get you most of the way there on your own.

The single biggest factor in how your gallery turns out isn’t the location or the light. It’s how relaxed your family feels. A little preparation goes a long way.

Once your gallery is ready, the real fun begins. This is where your images stop living on a hard drive and start living on your walls.
Depending on what fits your family and your home, that might mean a custom-designed gallery wall that grows session by session, a single statement piece of fine art for over the mantle, or a handcrafted heirloom album you can pass down for generations.
We guide you through this part of the process too, because choosing favorites and designing artwork can feel overwhelming on your own, and it shouldn’t be the part that stresses you out.
If you’re ready to start planning, we’d love to chat. Whether you already know the location and outfits you’re dreaming of, or you’d rather we guide you through every detail, that’s exactly what we’re here for.
